Medical profession has always been regarded as noble and respectable career. Most parents will dream of having their children pursuing in the arena in the hope of getting good earnings and indirectly, providing great services to the nation.
Throughout over my 4 years as a medical student, i've seen the attributes that are needed in order to survive this challenging and demanding course. However, 1 thing that i particularly noted is that, most of them tend to have high ego level or arrogance as a substitute.
Observing some of my lecturers who also happen to be medical doctors, i see that they like to brag about their accomplishments of treating patients. Some even blame other doctors for not getting the right diagnosis in the first place and putting them in a position to repair the mistakes. Yes, of course, you have the rights to feel like a superhero when it comes to situation like that but life can be full of karma. Hence, being humble should be the way and i am praying that i do not end up that way in the future Insyaallah.
Moving on, i also notice another interesting behaviour; some can be so competitive that they believe they are better than anyone else. Let me give you a scenario. If your friends give out their views regarding the case, do you agree with them or do you tend to have different opinions and feel that you are right in the first place? Do you like to object the suggestions given by them? I admit, i can be one of them too. This usually happens when i am confident about that certain topics and i have studied them well.
In a way, you can blame the whole medicine stereotyping. It has always been known that you have to be smart in order to be accepted by medical schools. In Asian countries especially, you at least need to be a straight As students if you ever think of applying. Furthermore, the fact that there are limited number of students for each intake, it can instill the feelings of superiority once succeeded.
Despite all those, i do encounter some who are totally humble but excellent doctors. I hope that i can be in that category soon. till then, i need to make sure i can do well for my exams first.
